West Brom hero Thompson urges Berahino to "get a grip"

West Bromwich Albion favourite Garry Thompson has urged Saido Berahino to "get a grip".

Thompson was disappointed to hear of Berahino's arrest this week on suspicion of drink-driving.

"He is a young kid who has played at every level for England up to the senior side. He knows the responsibility that goes with playing for his country. He knows it comes at a price," Thompson told the Birmingham Mail.

"I'm not going to sit here and hammer him. He is still a child. We all make mistakes but with money and fame comes responsibility.

"Twenty years ago he may have gotten away quite a lot but he is now very much under the microscope and with every goal and with every England call-up that microscope is only going to get more and more intense.

"I saw him thanking his mother for his England call-up and how proud he was of her. That's all very well and good but you only shift some of the spotlight onto your mother when you make mistakes.

"The simple message is; keep your nose clean.

"It's not the first time he has been involved in trouble and he can't keep making those mistakes. Rightly or wrongly he will be judged by what people see and read about him. And at the moment people's perceptions of Berahino as a person won't be great. He is probably a lovely lad but he has to learn a lesson."
