Wellington Phoenix recruit Ward explains Melbourne Victory departure

Wellington Phoenix new boy Nick Ward left the Melbourne Victory because he was loosely told he wouldn't be getting game time.

The 25-year old was a bit unsure as to why the Victory put him on the outer but knew he had to do something quickly before things went pear-shaped for his career.

"I had a few meetings with (Victory coach Ernie Merrick) and he didn't really give me much of an answer," Ward said.

"He said that he wanted to play younger players in front of me and I would have been waiting in the stands or, if anything, coming off the bench.

"Sometimes you've just got to move on. I could have sat in the stands or on the bench at Victory but I want to come and play regular football."

Ward played 45 minutes of the 2-1 loss to Perth Glory on the weekend and will be hoping for more game time against Sydney FC at Westpac Stadium on Saturday.
