Wellington Phoenix grab first away win of the season

Wellington Phoenix have managed to notch up their first win on the road this season with a 1-0 result over Perth Glory. Tim Brown scored a delightful goal in just the first minute of the match which ended up being enough to give the New Zealanders maximum points away from home, consigning the Glory to yet another loss.

Venue: nib Stadium, Perth Crowd: 6,000 Referee: Kris Griffiths-Jones Yellow cards:PG - Scott Neville 31', Jacob Burns 33', Brent Griffiths 64', Andy Todd 90+2' WP - Vince Lia 34', Tim Brown 44', Simon Elliott 68', Manny Muscat 70', Andrew Durante 90+1' Red card:PG - Jacob Burns 80'

GOAL The match got off to the perfect start for the Phoenix when Tim Brown produced a cracking left-footed finish inside the first minute, backing up his beauty against Brisbane Roar during the week.

Wellington were showing their attacking intention with plenty of positive play which forced the Glory to kick themselves into gear and make some runs into their own area as the match continued to ebb and flow.

An exciting first 45 minutes unfortunately had to come to a close as both sides had spells of ascendency in the opening term.

The first action of the second half saw Glory keeper Tando Velaphi called on to make a quality save when Paul Ifill struck strongly from close range but the gloveman was equal to the task.

Perth were doing all they could to get themselves back into the contest as they pushed numbers forward in search of a leveler and it nearly came when Jamie Coyne was played in on goal but his shot was well saved by Mark Paston.

Things were getting desperate for the home side when skipper Jacob Burns was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 80th minute and it proved to be too much for the Glory who dropped their eighth match in their past nine.

The win allowed the Phoenix to creep closer to the top six, enabling them to go three points clear of Perth in 6th place.
