Tottenham defender Jonathan Woodgate has stressed the importance of buying up in the January transfer window. The Spurs had begun to make a push up the league table when manager Harry Redknapp stepped in but that form has recently subsided and only goal difference is keeping them out of the relegation zone.

When asked if it was important to bring in new players, Woodgate replied, "Of course it is.

"We are in a relegation battle and we have to keep improving. Every team has to buy players.

"If you look at this time last season, Spurs signed players and we must keep on buying.

"We need as many top-quality players as we can get."
