Watmore hits hat-trick as Sunderland fire six past Tyne-Wear rivals Newcastle

Sunderland have thrashed Newcastle United 6-0 in a behind-closed-doors friendly match.

The fixture was organised to allow the Tyne-Wear rivals to maintain match fitness in their absence from this weekend's round of FA Cup fixtures.

Duncan Watmore was the standout performer for the Black Cats, notching a hat-trick, while Steven Fletcher netted a brace and Jack Rodwell also found the back of the net in the dominant display.

Newcastle's line-up featured a number of the club's academy players who struggled to cope with the Premier League experience of their opponents at the Stadium of Light.

The two sides meet for the next edition of the Tyne-Wear derby on March 20.
