England coach Gareth Southgate discusses the appointment of Steven Gerrard as Aston Villa manager.

Gerrard left Rangers on Thursday to be named new manager of Aston Villa after their sacking of Dean Smith earlier this week.

Southgate played with Gerrard for England and also is a former Villa defender and offered his opinion on the appointment during yesterday's England media conference.

He admitted sympathy for Smith, while also stating it was encouraging seeing another English manager take charge in the Premier League.
