That was best performance I have been involved with - Tottenham's Defoe

Tottenham's five-goal hero Jermain Defoe admits the 9-1 thrashing of Wigan on Sunday was the best performance he has ever been involved in.

Defoe netted all of his goals in the second half as the Spurs turned it on after half-time, scoring eight to bring the Latics to their knees.

Despite putting five into the back of the net, Defoe praised his teammates for a scintillating display of football.

"It's probably the best (game I have been involved in), not just because of the result, but because of the performance," Defoe told Sky Sports.

"It was important to get off to a good start, and keep the intensity high. I thought the two midfielders, Tommo (Huddlestone) and Wilson (Palacios), were fantastic, as were the whole team.

"For the forwards that makes it easier, because you only have to make sure your movement is good."

Defoe admitted he was hoping he could score a sixth goal and create a bit of history to become the first player to score more than five in a match to surpass Andy Cole and Alan Shearer who he now shares the record for most goals in a Premier League match.

"To be honest, I was (trying to add a sixth)," he added.

"I looked up and there was about another 15 minutes left, so I thought I'm going to get chances. It did cross my mind if I could get another one.

"I had another chance I was disappointed with, I think (Emmerson) Boyce got back and made a good challenge, but you can't complain with five goals."
