Waddle: Real Madrid defender Rudiger superb against Haaland

Former England star Chris Waddle feels Manchester City were the better team at Real Madrid last night.

However, he heaped praise on Real defender Toni Rudiger for the marking job he did on Haaland.

City drew 1-1 in the first-leg of their Champions League semifinal.

Waddle said, "I don't think Real Madrid - apart from little five to 10-minute spells where they really dominated - got up the field enough and you can say they didn't put the ball across the goal enough for where Benzema is going to feed off anything.

"He had a good header at the far post from a free-kick which he should have scored when you look at the replay but apart from that there was not a lot of service and not a lot of chances created for him.

"With Haaland, you have to say Rudiger has done an unbelievable job on him. He's basically man-marked him. He's strong, he's quick, he's physical and maybe City could have dragged Haaland around a bit to use his pace - he got in once and it was a good save by Courtois.

"But it became a battle that you thought Haaland wasn't going to win physically and Rudiger came out on top."
