Villa's Friedel plays down impressive debut

Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Friedel has dismissed his superb debut in last week's friendly against Reading.

He told Villa's website: "Forget the penalty save, it was more important that I got 90 minutes behind the new team.

"Saving a penalty is all fine and well but hopefully I don't have to face too many penalties this season. If I do, hopefully I can save them.

"Saturday was about getting my feet wet a little bit and letting the players know what I can do and also letting me find out what they can do. I'm really pleased so far with what I've seen at the club. We've got some really good talent.

"I know we have a small squad so we're going to have to be careful and try to keep everyone as fit as possible through the season or quickly add to the squad."

Friedel added: "I've been going through all the pre-season with Blackburn and I'd played in a few games before I came here.

"So it's not as if I went into the game cold. But it was really important that I get behind the back-four as quickly as possible.

"It was very good to play a team that was only a week or so off their campaign, which meant they were just about up to full fitness. So it was good and I was very pleased."
