Villa boss O'Neill assures Sorensen

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill has assured Thomas Sorensen that he will have every chance of winning a first team place this season.

O'Neill insists every player must fight for his place in the team, including both Sorensen - who is set to return next week following a hamstring strain - and on-loan Liverpool keeper Scott Carson.

O'Neill said: "I've seen the quotes attributed to Thomas Sorensen and my position is one I've held for a considerable time and that is the manager is the one usually who decides who comes in and out of the football club. I am going to try to be in that position for a little while longer."

He added: "When I signed Scott Carson on loan there was no guarantee that he would play in every game.

"Liverpool would obviously like him to play in every game but there is no agreement that this would happen. It is on the understanding that if he grabbed his chance to play he would then go with it.

"It would be foolish of me to guarantee someone a place in the side regardless of what happens.

"He will have to battle for his place like everyone else in the club."
