Vertonghen agent: Benfica not his first choice; big Serie A offers

The agent of Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen admits Benfica wasn't his first choice.

Vertonghen has moved to Benfica on a three-year contract.

Agent Tom de Mul told Sporza: "Benfica was not initially the first choice of Jan Vertonghen.

"Everything went smoothly, the contact with general director Tiago Pinto and Rui Costa was a few weeks ago. Benfica worked well to convince Vertonghen because there were other interested clubs. But Benfica made Jan a priority. They offered him stability and continuity, especially with a three-year contract. This is crucial at this stage in Jan's career.

"There were contacts with Italian clubs like Roma, Inter and especially Napoli, which, at a certain moment, were very concrete.

"For Jan, the three-year contract was very important, as was the fact that he could play for trophies in the Champions League or, certainly, in the Europa League. And the life of his wife and children in Lisbon can be very pleasant."
