Veliz scores as Spurs lose to Peterborough in EFL Trophy

Alejo Veliz was on the mark as Tottenham U21 lost to Peterborough in last night's EFL Trophy clash.

Veliz opened the scoring for Spurs with a header before the senior Posh team took control through goals from Emmanuel Fernandez, Ricky-Jade Jones and Kwame Poku.

Spurs hopes of reaching the knockout phase remain alive with their final group game against Cambridge United decisive.

Coach Wayne Burnett later told Tottenham's website: "At this level, when you're playing against the calibre of team that we played tonight, when opportunities present themselves, you have to take them.

"Usually we've been pretty good at that, so that's the disappointing thing and it's a disappointing result to take, but I can't fault the players for the way in which we tried to play our football.

"If you look at the game, in the first 25 or 30 minutes I felt we dominated the ball, then they came at us and made it a little bit more difficult for us. They've got some very good players and a manager who has had numerous promotions and knows how to win football matches, so it was a good test for us.

"They're flying high in League One and we knew how tough this would be but, as I said, in terms of effort and the way in which we tried to play, I can't fault our players. We're disappointed that we haven't got a better result after the chances we created and the chances we were given, but we have to regroup and go again because we've got another game on Friday at Norwich in the league."
