Vancouver Whitecaps sign Malta international Barbara

Vancouver Whitecaps have signed Maltese striker Etienne Barbara.

The 29-year old attacker has joined the Whitecaps from Carolina RailHawks where he won the 2011 NASL Golden Ball and was named the NASL MVP.

Vancouver head coach Martin Rennie was delighted to add the Malta international who recently had a loan spell with homeland club Sliema Wanderers.

"Etienne is an aggressive, powerful player that is determined to succeed," said Rennie. "He brings versatility to our line-up both as a wide midfielder or a striker."

Barbara added: "I am delighted and honoured to become a member of Whitecaps FC. I would like to thank my coaches, staff, and teammates for the faith and positive support they have shown in me. I am looking forward to getting back on the pitch and contributing to my new club. I have heard many great things about the passionate fans in Vancouver, so I look forward to seeing them and playing for them at BC Place."

Barbara scored 28 goals and provided 10 assists in 54 appearances over two seasons with the RailHawks under Rennie's tutelage.
