Vancouver Whitecaps captain Jay DeMerit has undergone successful surgery on an Achilles tendon injury.
The 33-year old centre-back ruptured his Achilles in the MLS 1-0 season-opening win over Toronto FC on Saturday and could miss the remainder of the campaign.
Despite the injury, Whitecaps head coach Martin Rennie was expecting the former Watford defender to make a complete recovery.
"Though we're disappointed to see Jay go out with an injury, his leadership role will continue to be very important to our squad," said Rennie.
"We expect him to make a full recovery and look forward to seeing him back on the pitch."
