Van Gaal serious about bringing Bale to Man Utd

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is determined to test Real Madrid's resolve for Gareth Bale.

The Manchester Evening News says United executive vice chairman Ed Woodward is prepared to back his manager with the funds to mount a genuine challenge for the Premier League title next season and make an impact on the Champions League.

Van Gaal wants top class additions in defence, midfield and attack.

Bale is a long-term United target, with Woodward attempting to hijack his world record £85.3m move from Tottenham to Real Madrid in 2013.

United have been on alert to Bale's potential availability for the majority of what has been a difficult season for the Welshman.
