Van Gaal: I was ready to take Man Utd job TWELVE years ago

Louis van Gaal hopes it's second time lucky at Manchester United.

Van Gaal was in line to manage United 12 years ago before Sir Alex Ferguson did a dramatic U-turn.

This time around Van Gaal went against his wife Truus's wishes - she had wanted him to retire after Holland's World Cup adventure in Brazil.

Van Gaal said: "I was going to replace Sir Alex in 2002 when he wanted to get out but in the end he came back.

"For me, it was retirement or going to England. My wife wanted me to retire but now we've gone to England. But I didn't call Manchester United.

"I didn't call Bayern Munich - they have always called me and I'm proud of that."
