Louis van Gaal is in contact with AS Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman about joining him at Manchester United.

The Daily Express says it was thought that the Red Devils could rekindle their interest this summer before the 24-year-old suffered a season-ending knee injury in March.

Strootman is set to miss the World Cup as he looks to recover from ruptured knee ligaments but that hasn't stopped Van Gaal investigating whether the player would be interested in joining him at Old Trafford.

Van Gaal is expected to be named United boss next week and hold talks over transfer targets before focusing on World Cup preparations with the Netherlands.
