van der Vaart and Modric are 'brilliant' - Tottenham's King

Rafael van der Vaart and Luka Modric could form a brilliant partnership in midfield for Tottenham according to centre-back Ledley King. The 29-year old has seen the duo perform firsthand at training and senses that a great understanding and relationship is about to blossom for the good of the club.

"They could be brilliant," King told the London Evening Standard. "I have seen them work together. When they're in training, it's tough to get the ball off them.

"They're so small, their touch is so good and they play little one-twos - they're just brilliant players.

"The more they play together, the better it will be. They can open any defence, and we have players who can score. We know Jermain Defoe is injured but Pav (Roman Pavlyuchenko) showed against Twente that he is a goalscorer by stepping up and scoring his penalties.

"Rafael also has the ability to take the team by the scruff of the neck. You can see he wants the ball and wants to make things happen and that gives everyone a lift."
