USA goes down to Germany in U20 World Cup opener

The USA U20 team were defeated 3-0 by Germany in their World Cup opener on Saturday. Played at Mubarak Stadium in Suez, Egypt, the Germans opened up their account in the 30th minute when Kayserispor winger Semih Aydilek converted a penalty before Florian Jungwirth added a second just two minutes later.

The victory for the one-time champions was rounded out in the 72nd minute when Manuel Schaeffler netted.

USA coach Thomas Rongen was disappointed with the result but was looking ahead to the next clash with Cameroon who defeated Korean 2-0.

"This clearly wasn't a good day for us," Rongen said.

"We have to give Germany some credit, they are the European champions and we knew we'd be in for a long and hard match, we were prepared for that.

"Saying that, the team as a whole, especially in the first half, gave Germany a little too much respect

"We tried to pull back in the second half, where we played somewhat better with the changes that we made.

"Based on performances and the scouting of Cameroon, I would certainly think that we will make some changes for our next game."
