Twitter abuse prompts referee Halsey to make police complaint

Referee Mark Halsey has made a complaint to Greater Manchester Police regarding Twitter abuse he received.

The 51-year old, who survived the throat cancer he was diagnosed with in 2009, sent Liverpool's Jonjo Shelvey off late in the first half of their 2-1 loss to Manchester United at Anfield yesterday, a decision which met a lot of criticism from outsiders.

However, two Reds fans took it a bit too far when they posted the following: "I hope Mark Halsey gets cancer again and dies," and "Mark Halsey should've died of cancer."

These posts have forced Halsey to make an official complaint to police which was confirmed by Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL).
