Goalkeeper
David de Gea (Manchester United) De Gea arrived at Old Trafford for a British record fee for a goalkeeper of £17.8m in June 2011. After a slow start to life with United, the now 22-year old gloveman has become the undisputed number one for the Red Devils following his apprenticeship with Atletico Madrid.
Defenders
Glen Johnson (Liverpool) England right-back who was lured to Anfield from Portsmouth for a fee of £17m in June 2009. The Reds, then managed by Rafael Benitez, actually only paid £10m for Johnson as they were still owed £7m from the sale of Peter Crouch 12 months earlier.
Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United) The Red Devils brought the then-23-year old Ferdinand from Leeds United in a deal which would reach £38m. The centre-half was at the time the most expensive British footballer in history and the world's most expensive defender. He has gone on to win six Premier League titles, two League Cups and one Champions League with United.
David Luiz (Chelsea) Brazilian centre-back who was brought in from Benfica for more than £21m in the winter of 2011. Luiz took a little while to nail down a spot in the Blues first team but has gone on to help the London club win the 2012 Champions League and FA Cup double as well as last season's Europa League title.
Aleksandar Kolarov (Manchester City) Serbian left-back signed by City from Lazio for £19m in July 2010. Kolarov was signed by Roberto Mancini and was first choice until Gael Clichy was brought in a year after his arrival. The pair remain in rotation by new boss Manuel Pellegrini.
Midfielders
Mesut Ozil (Arsenal) Purchased from Real Madrid for a Gunners club record of £43million on deadline day, the German playmaker has started life in north London in fine fashion. Arsenal fans are pinning their hopes on Ozil as they look to end a nine-year trophy drought.
Fernandinho (Manchester City) The Brazilian was purchased from Ukraine giants Shakhtar Donetsk for just over £30m this summer. Fernandinho has plenty of experience in the Champions League and is expected to help guide City out of the group stage for the first time.
Michael Essien (Chelsea) The Ghanaian powerhouse arrived at Chelsea from Lyon back in the summer of 2005 for a fee of £24.4m. Since then he has had to deal with a number of serious leg injuries and a loan to Real Madrid last season. Has contributed to two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, one League Cup and one Champions League trophy.
Eden Hazard (Chelsea)Chelsea spent £32m on the promising Belgian winger in May 2012, luring him from French club Lille. Hazard broke onto the scene at the beginning of last season and has been steady since. Has an enormous future ahead.
Strikers
Fernando Torres (Chelsea) The Blues paid Liverpool £50m for Torres in January 2011 but the Spaniard has not been able to recreate his Anfield form in London. Has just 15 goals in over 80 Premier League appearances since his arrival at Stamford Bridge.
Sergio Aguero (Manchester City) The Argentine joined City from Atletico Madrid for £38m in the summer of 2011 and has since netted a total of 51 times in 94 outings. Helped City win the 2011/12 Premier League title after a successful spell in Madrid.
