Tottenham midfielder Ryan Mason has backed his former teammate and Australian international Massimo Luongo to soon take a step up to the Premier League.

Luongo has performed brilliantly for Swindon Town this season and has helped the Robins challenge for promotion.

He also burst onto the international scene with the Socceroos when he was named player of the tournament in his nation's successful Asian Cup campaign earlier this year.

"He's a great player and friend, and back when we were at Spurs together you could see he had a lot to offer and had so many facets to his game," Mason told SBS.

"He's done remarkably well with club and country - and when he was voted the player of the tournament at the Asian Cup, I wasn't surprised at all.

"I definitely think he can play at a higher level," he added.

"It's probably only a matter of time now."
