TOTTENHAM v STOKE RECAP: Late Potters show denies Spurs

Stoke City escaped from North London with a 2-2 draw from their clash with Tottenham on Saturday.

The Potters trailed by two goals with just over 10 minutes remaining and courtesy of a Marko Arnautovic penalty and a late effort from Mame Biram Diouf, managed to grab a point at White Hart Lane.

Eric Dier opened the scoring for Spurs in the 19th minute when he met Christian Eriksen's in-swinging corner with a glancing front post header which Jack Butland was unable to keep out before Nacer Chadli added a second in stoppage time of the first half when he stroked home a volley from Ben Davies' pinpoint cross after a strong run down the left.

But Mark Hughes' men were back in the contest in the 78th minute when Arnautovic fired past Hugo Lloris from the spot after Joselu had been brought down near the byline by Toby Alderweireld before Diouf grabbed the visitors a point with a feather-fine touch on Stephen Ireland's stand-up ball from the left.

The Potters find themselves 13th on the league table, just one spot ahead of Mauricio Pochettino's Spurs.

TALKING POINTS

- Spurs unlucky not to have more than a point so far this season. Will it be a case of near enough being not good enough?

- The Potters fought hard for a draw. Can their new passing style combined with substance see them produce another top-half finish?

WHAT'S NEXT?

Tottenham head to unbeaten Leicester in search of their first win while Stoke will be doing likewise when they travel to Norwich.

QUOTES CORNER

Tottenham's Pochettino on his side's start to the season:

"It is true we have taken only one point from two games but the performance against Manchester United was good, today was very good in the first 70 minutes, but we need to be more consistent over 90 minutes."

Stoke boss Hughes on his team's ability to produce a draw:

"If we had had 10 or 15 more minutes maybe we would have won it but given the circumstances we're delighted to have come back and got a point out the game."
