Tottenham look set to miss out on Palermo defender Simon Kjaer with news that he is likely to land at German club Wolfsburg.
Spurs along with Manchester United and Manchester City were hoping to lure the 21-year old Danish centre-half to England but it seems that former Middlesbrough boss Steve McLaren has won the race for his services if what Palermo director of sport Walter Sabatini's comments are anything to go by.
"We still need to formalise the deal and the player has to agree terms with the German club," Sabatini told Mediagol.
"Let us just say there is no signed paperwork, but there are some very advanced negotiations in place between Palermo and Wolfsburg.
"The reports suggesting a 14m transfer are more or less accurate, yes."
Sabatini admitted he thought a bigger club would come in for Kjaer but was confident that would happen in the future.
"I'm sure he'll reach those big clubs soon enough, assuming the Wolfsburg deal is finalised," he added.
"He had hoped for Manchester United or Juventus, but I'm confident he will get those opportunities in the future."
