Tottenham's Vertonghen urges in-form Kane to forego England U21 call

Jan Vertonghen believes Tottenham teammate Harry Kane should snub any potential England call-up this summer.

The 21-year old striker, who has 16 Premier League goals this season, is expected to be selected for the England U21 squad for the European Championships in the Czech Republic in June but Vertonghen suggests he should look after his own interests in order to freshen up for the 2015/16 campaign.

"Of course England want him. He is a brilliant striker and he can be the main man, but I think he needs his rest for next season," said the Belgian defender.

"It's his call and I know a player always wants to play but sometimes you have to be careful. It's a difficult one because last season I played with injuries, but sometimes you just can't.

"You have to think about what's going to come."
