Tottenham's Dempsey laments conditions as USA drop Honduras clash

Clint Dempsey suggests the conditions on San Pedro Sula did not allow the USA to play their natural game on Wednesday.

The US lost 2-1 to Honduras in their opening fixture of the final round of 2014 World Cup qualifying despite the Tottenham ace opening the scoring with a sublime volley in the 36th minute.

Juan Carlos Garcia replied for the Catrachos less than five minutes later before Jerry Bengtson grabbed a 79th minute winner and Dempsey felt that the hot conditions contributed to the capitulation of the Americans.

"It was difficult game and we knew it was always going to be tough, especially dealing with the conditions. Most of us are playing in Europe and we come here and it's over 90 degrees at 3:00," he said after the match.

"Both teams have to deal with those conditions but it's difficult because you can't press and run and have the endurance that you would have in other games. It was frustrating trying to adapt and play but you have to keep going."
