Tottenham great Defoe set for Toronto FC return

Toronto FC head coach Greg Vanney says Jermain Defoe is ready for action.

The English striker, who has scored 11 goals in 16 MLS appearances, has not played for the Canadian club since late August because of a groin injury but is likely to be back in the line-up against LA Galaxy on Saturday.

TFC head coach Greg Vanney was excited about Defoe's imminent return as it comes at a time when the Reds sit one point out of the Eastern Conference play-offs.

"Jermain looks good," Vanney told reporters.

"He's fit, he's been training, not so much with the team last week, but he was reintegrated Sunday, and then he trained with the group [Tuesday].

"He looks good. He's just worked this week getting some more sort of soccer fitness and match fitness under him in terms of the training matches and sharpening up just a little more."

Vanney added: "He looks great; he's close to ready. I anticipate he'll be available, yes."

TFC find themselves sixth in the East on 40 points, a point behind fifth-placed New York Red Bull, while the Galaxy currently lead the entire MLS on 57 points.
