Tottenham defend themselves over Fryers signing

Tottenham have backed themselves after signing Ezekiel Fryers from Standard Liege.

The 20-year old former Manchester United defender arrived at White Hart Lane after a six-month spell in Belgium but the deal seems fishy to Sir Alex Ferguson.

Spurs wanted Fryers last summer but could not come to an agreement regarding transfer fees and the United boss believes they have bent the rules to land him this January.

However, the North London club does not agree with a club spokesman revealing: "Zeki chose to go to Standard Liege, who paid compensation to Manchester United.

"Zeki enjoyed his time at Standard. However, when Standard sacked their manager in November Zeki wasn't part of the new manager's plans, which he accepts and understands happens in football.

"This afforded us a second opportunity to sign the player and as per FIFA's solidarity contribution mechanism, Manchester United will receive five per cent of the transfer fee we have paid."
