Tottenham cannot bank on big summer spends - Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino insists Tottenham will not be breaking the bank in the next transfer window.

Spurs indulged in more than £100million of purchases in the summer of 2013 after selling Gareth Bale to Real Madrid for £85m but the influx of expensive stars has yielded nothing for the north Londoners.

Ahead of yet another important transfer period, manager Pochettino has made it clear that Tottenham will not be indulging in similar spending exploits this time around.

"We need to learn from the past. We have a plan to develop over the next few years and we need to deliver it," he said.

"Two seasons ago maybe the manager had a lot of money to spend like Koeman at Southampton and maybe Van Gaal at Manchester United. Do I have the same possibility? No.

"We have a different plan and a different way now. We have to work hard now - very hard!

"We need to be clever in the way that we build the new squad and a very good team to try to win a trophy.

"Our supporters want us to be ambitious. We want to win the title and for that we need to create first a very good team and deliver that."
