Tottenham boss Redknapp sweating on King Cup final fitness

Tottenham skipper Ledley King faces an anxious wait to see if he can make tomorrow's Carling Cup final against Manchester United.

"It's always the case with Ledley of waiting to see how he recovers after a game - he doesn't train from Monday to Friday, comes out the day before a game and has a loosener then pitches up and plays," said Spurs boss Harry Redknapp.

"I'll have a look at him and see how he is really. Monday-Sunday can be a problem for him and all he needs is an extra day or two."

King has only played in one Carling Cup game this season and admitted last month he had no divine right to play in the final.

Redknapp has a reliable back-up in Michael Dawson, who missed last season's final through injury - but Spurs appear more solid with King in defence.

"He's a massive, important player for us," Redknapp said. "We are very lucky in this country, we have some very good English centre-backs and he is right up there with the very best of them.

"I think he is a fantastic player, a great athlete. It's amazing that a player can not train all week and come out and play. He's a one-off.

"It's just beyond belief how he can not train and turn in the kind of performances he does. It's a bit like Paul McGrath did at Aston Villa, he'd come out and be fantastic. Ledley's doing that at the moment when available."
