Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has paid tribute to Jan Vertonghen.

The defender's contract expires on July 27, and there has been no clarification over the future of the 33-year-old Belgian.

Mourinho says: "A person who has been in the club for eight months cannot talk about someone who has been in the club for eight years and contributed to the club.

"The only thing I can say is that it is a pleasure every day to work with a guy of his dimensions. I have only good things to say about Jan. Only he knows what the future holds.

"At the moment we want to inform and it is the right process for a player who has been in the club for so long. Eight years means a lot in modern football."
