Tottenham are battling to land Southampton defender Toby Alderweireld.

The Belgian is on-loan at Saints from Atletico Madrid.

The Mirror says Southampton have a £6.8m option to buy him, but Atletico can buy that out for £1.5m and then sell him to the highest bidder.

Tottenham are keen on Alderweireld, who can also play right-back and holding midfielder - and the Belgium international has said he wants to stay in English football.

Alderweireld said: "Atletico will decide my future, but I would like to stay in the Premier League. That some of the big clubs show interest proves I'm doing well."
