Tottenham again lose to Man Utd in Carling Cup

In what was a rerun of last years Carling Cup final Manchester United again came out on top with a 2-0 quarter final win at Old Trafford . Tottenham looked lively for long periods but their final ball and finishing let them down.

United for their part relied on the counter attack an finished clinically when the opportunity arose.

Darron Gibson scored two spectacular first-half goals to end Spurs hopes of another Wembley appearance.

The first was a 25-yard low strike across goal and his second a curling effort into the top corner after exchanging passes with Danny Welbeck.

The visitor's took the game to United after the break but Nemanja Vidic marshalled the defence to restrict Spurs chances.

David Bentley shot straight at the Reds keeper Tomasz Kuszczak and Jermaine Defoe had a shot charged down as United comfortably played out time.
