Torres backing Lampard to break Chelsea goals record

Chelsea striker Fernando Torres hopes Frank Lampard can break the club's scoring record before the end of the season.

Lampard's current contract expires in the summer and he has yet to agree terms on a new deal. Torres is hoping the England international, who has won 10 major honours since he joined Chelsea in 2001, will still get to extend his stay at Stamford Bridge. Lampard, 34, is also just two goals behind matching the club's all-time leading scorer, Bobby Tambling, on 202.

Torres told the London Evening Standard: "I don't know about that [if he is leaving or not] but hopefully he can score the goals he needs to be the club's top scorer, too. That will be the best for him [if he does go].

"I hope Lampard can stay. Hopefully, what he wants is what happens because we really like him. Hopefully he can finish by lifting the Champions League again, maybe next season. That would be better."
