Jermain Defoe has been named the Major League Soccer Player of the Week for Week 2 of the 2014 season.
The English striker marked his MLS debut by scoring a match-winning brace for Toronto FC in their 2-1 triumph over the Seattle Sounders at CenturyLink Field which landed him the Week 2 prize.
Former Tottenham star Defoe opened his MLS and TFC account in the 17th minute when he finished neatly after receiving a through ball from Jonathan Osorio before adding a second seven minutes later when he pounced on a backpass from Marco Pappa before firing beyond Stefan Frei.
Defoe was voted for by the North American Soccer Reporters following a stellar debut, beating off competition from San Jose Earthquakes defender Victor Bernardez, who also scored a double.
