French forward Eric Hassli received his second red card in just his third MLS appearance as a total of three players saw red in the Vancouver Whitecaps versus New England Revolution match last night.
The match ended 1-1 as the 'Caps finished with nine men and the Revs ten in front of just under 20,000 fans at Empire Field.
Hassli, who has experienced a bizarre beginning to his MLS career, was subbed on at half-time but immediately booked for a collision with Kevin Alston. He then stepped up to take the penalty in the 55th minute which was awarded when Camilo Sanvezzo was brought down in the area.
The former FC Zurich man put the spot kick away for his third MLS goal but proceeded to remove his shirt, receiving a second booking which forced him off the pitch just over ten minutes after he came on.
This brought the Whitecaps down to nine men after Gershon Koffie got his marching orders just before the break for an elbow on Pat Phelan but somehow the home side found themselves ahead.
New England then had their dose of the referee when AJ Soares was sent from the pitch for a sliding tackle on Atiba Harris but they managed to grab an equaliser in stoppage time when Serbian Ilija Stolica slotted home after being found by a Zack Schilawski header to get a share of the points.
The draw gave Vancouver a record of 1-2-1 since entering the MLS which sees them sit fourth on the Western Conference table as the Revs moved to the top of the East with an undefeated run of one win and three draws from their opening four games.
