Swindon boss wants fans to 'lay off' Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, West Ham, QPR target Luongo

Swindon Town manager Mark Cooper has urged supporters not to give too much stick to talented midfielder Massimo Luongo.

The Australian midfielder, 22, recently suggested he was ready to leave the Robins for a bigger club which Cooper feels may have landed him in hot water with the faithful of the Wiltshire outfit.

Luongo has emerged as a Swindon star since his permanent transfer from Tottenham in 2013 and has recently been linked with Premier League quartet Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, West Ham United and QPR but Cooper insists the Socceroos ace, who was the Player of the Tournament at the 2015 Asian Cup, should not get too carried away as he has a job to do with the League One club.

"When people hear that a player has said whatever he's said, they sometimes have misconceptions," Cooper told Total Swindon Sport.

"Straight away, (the fans think) he's not going to be that bothered. Sometimes, when he's pulled out of a tackle, they straight away have a downer on it.

"Mass is desperate to leave the club having got promotion because there's nothing guaranteed for Mass. Everyone thinks there's a move guaranteed - there isn't. He knows that he's got to be playing really, really well if he's going to get a move to the Premiership.

"At the minute there's nothing guaranteed so he's desperate to play and desperate to get us over the line. I think the fans need to lay off him a little bit. He's been a really good player for the club while he's been here and he'll continue to give everything he's got while he's here."
