Swansea rookie Monk gatecrashes Van Gaal's welcome party with Man Utd shock

Swansea City shocked Louis van Gaal on his Manchester United home debut as they pulled off a stunning - and well deserved - 2-1 win at Old Trafford today.

Swansea were worthy victors as manager Garry Monk was rewarded for his attacking approach to the game.

Van Gaal sprung a surprise by naming Jesse Lingard in his midfield ahead of Nani.

Young defender Tyler Blackett was also handed a United debut as Van Gaal went with an attacking line-up, filling his wing-back roles with Lingard and Ashley Young.

Monk named Lukasz Fabianski in goal and Gylfi Sigurdsson in his midfield, with Wilfried Bony playing in attack on his own.

United suffered an early setback when Lingard was forced off with a knee injury following a tackle with Ashley Williams. The midfielder was replaced by Adnan Januzaj.

Barely minutes later Swansea were ahead. Sigurdsson laying the pass on for Ki Sung-Yeung to drive his shot past David De Gea from outside the United penalty area.

It was a well deserved lead for the visitors, with United struggling to put any threatening attacks together.

Swansea refused to be broken down - and with Ki and Jonjo Shelvey dominant in the middle third of the pitch, they went into the halftime break 1-0 ahead.

Van Gaal immediately changed his system for the second-half, hooking Javier Hernandez for Nani and moving Juan Mata into the No10 role behind Wayne Rooney.

The decision immediately paid off for United, with Mata pulling the strings and the hosts looking better for it.

On 54 minutes, United were level - thanks to new captain Rooney.

Swansea failed to clear a United corner and Rooney was on hand to ram the ball past Fabianski with a spectacular overhead kick.

Momentum was now with United, but Monk then pulled off a masterstroke, going for the win by introducing Jefferson Montero for Nathan Dyer 20 minutes into the second-half.

Within six minutes, Swansea had the lead. Montero jinked his way past Jones and his cross eventually found Sigurdsson who drove the ball past De Gea.

Monk continued to attack with his substitutions, replacing Bony with Bafetimbi Gomis on 77 minutes and Frenchman almost made it 1-3, finding himself in the clear only to be denied by a late lunge from Jones.

United huffed and puffed in the remaining minutes, but deep balls to substitute Marouane Fellaini were easily handled by the Swans defence.

A hectic final minute brought several half chances for United, but Swansea held on for an amazing victory for the club and a great moment for their young manager Monk.
