Sunderland captain Dean Whitehead believes £9 million goalkeeper Craig Gordon will benefit from a spell on the sidelines.

He said: "The rest will probably do Craig the world of good. I know he wants to play in every game, as all players do.

"But outfield players get rested every once in a while and it is no different for goalkeepers.

"Giving Craig a break might be just what he needed."
