Sunderland's Laing kicks Newcastle into action over Montagu and North Fenham partnership

Newcastle United have established links with Montagu and North Fenham Boys Club.

The Evening Chronicle says recently United's assistant manager John Carver held a training session at the club in the city's west end, with Paul Dummett also in attendance.

Monty chairman Neil Rowan said: "This is where your footballers are.

"Your hotbeds are your Elswicks, your Scotswoods, where they are kicking a ball in the backstreets but they just want to play."

Monty produced both the Toon's assistant boss and former Aston Villa, Everton and England star Kevin Richardson.

After youngsters like Louis Laing ended up heading to Sunderland from Monty, and not to Newcastle United, steps were taken for United to build relationships with local clubs.

Carver said: "Louis Laing is from the same area as me.

"He is a West End lad, he played at Montagu Boys Club."
