Sunderland signing Cole targets record

New Sunderland signing, the former Newcastle and Manchester United frontman Andrew Cole, has set himself an immediate target of 12 goals to become only the second player in Premiership history to break the 200 barrier.

Cole has netted 188 times in a top-flight career that, along with Newcastle and Man U, has also included stints at Blackburn, Fulham, Man City and Portsmouth.

That leaves him second on the top goalscorers list, with Shearer way out in front with 260 goals to his name.

At 35, Cole will not eclipse Shearer, but he does intend to complete his personal double-century.

He said: "It has to be a motivation. If it wasn't a motivation, I shouldn't be playing.

"Scoring goals is a big motivation for me on a personal level, and at club level I just want to do as well as possible with Sunderland.

"I'm very excited about the challenge."
