Sunderland have opened talks for Fulham attacker Clint Dempsey.

The Daily Mail says Liverpool's long pursuit of Dempsey looks set to end in failure after Sunderland opened talks with the American.

Dempsey had expected to tie up a move to Anfield earlier this summer, but the deal collapsed with the two clubs unable to come to an agreement.
