Sunderland's Bruce: I thought Bent scored a hat-trick

Steve Bruce was under the impression that his summer signing Darren Bent had scored a penalty against Wolves.

The Sunderland boss admitted that he does not watch penalties and just thought that Bent, his penalty taker, had taken both of the penalties issued to the his team.

But Bent had handed the second spot-kick to his striker partner Kenwyne Jones and when he netted his second in the 90th minute, Bruce was adamant Bent had completed a hat-trick.

"I do not watch pens, it is a superstition of mine," said Bruce.

"But that won't happen again. Darren is our penalty taker. We don't just take the ball and throw it to someone else because they want to score. You do not just do that in this league. It is the kind of thing you do on the pitch with your mates. There would have been hell to pay if he had missed.

"I only found out five minutes after the game that Benty did not get that second penalty. Here is me thinking Benty scored a hat-trick!

"It won't happen again. Benty is our best penalty taker. He has not missed one in his career. It is a mentality thing."
