Sunderland keeper Mignolet takes heart from Newcastle disappointment

Simon Mignolet is urging Sunderland to use their derby-day disappointment when they were denied a win over rivals Newcastle by a last minute leveller as motivation for the rest of the season. The 23-year-old Belgium international came within minutes of writing himself into Wearside folklore with a late penalty save from Newcastle striker Demba Ba in Sunday's fiercely-contested Tyne-Wear derby.

He said: "A point away at St James' is not bad, so we don't have to pick ourselves up like we did at our ground at the beginning of the season, or last year when we lost 5-1.

"If you battle for 30 minutes or 40 minutes with 10 men, then as a team, you grow out of it and maybe it can be a good thing for the next games as well.

"The goal we conceded was a disappointment, but we played a good game and after everything settles down, we can be proud of the game we played and look forward to Liverpool."
