Sunderland keeper Mignolet counting on support from Belgian fans

Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet is hoping some local Belgian support can help them move up the table.

Mignolet's Sunderland performances have not gone unnoticed in Belgium. The keeper, who turned down PSV Eindhoven to join Bruce, won his first full caps against Austria and Azerbaijan last month.

And he is hopeful his loyal band of fans from his home-town will be able to make a return trip to Wearside before the season ends.

More than 30 have already been over this season, travelling for 24 hours by bus, armed with gifts of local cheeses, mincemeats and a letter from the town mayor and club president.

Mignolet said: "It was crazy but I had so much respect for them. I managed to meet them and buy them all a drink but a few of them had already enjoyed a few drinks by then. Hopefully they will come back again."
