Dick Advocaat expects to have a say in Sunderland's summer transfer plans.

Sunderland cannot afford to delay planning their summer recruitment drive until a new head coach arrives, and Advocaat has signalled that he will work with sporting director Lee Congerton to identify the areas of the squad in need of strengthening.

Asked whether his short-term role means he does not need to look at the bigger picture, Advocaat said: "Still I like to discuss about players and that kind of thing.

"That's very important for this club, to get the right players in."
