Successful opening round for W-League

The Westfield W-League kicked off on the weekend with a successful first round. Sydney FC opened up their account in the first ever W-League match played at Members Equity Stadium against the Perth Glory. Leena Khamis became the first scorer in the competition in just the sixth minute of Sydney's 4-0 triumph. She followed up with a second goal just two minutes later and Danielle Small and Heather Garriock added to the tally in the 39th and 61st minutes. In the first curtain-raiser, Melbourne Victory overcame the Central Coast Mariners 2-0 thanks to goals from Marlies Oostdam and Rebecca Tegg whilst the Queensland Roar accounted for Adelaide United 4-1, inspired by a Lana Harch double. Opening week was rounded off by the Newcastle Jets who came from behind to defeat Canberra United 2-1. The match winner was Katie Gill who completed a brace after Canberra's Sasha McDonnell scored in the second minute.
