Stoke City legend Mike Pejic has slammed the England omission of centre-half Ryan Shawcross.
Pejic wrote in the The Sentinel: "What we saw from Ryan Shawcross and Peter Crouch at Manchester City last week was two performances of England calibre.
"Yet both players seem to be a million miles away from figuring in Roy Hodgson's strange plans.
"Instead of Shawcross, we have to make do with Phil Jones, because he plays for Manchester United.
"We also have 20-year-old John Stones from Everton coming into the side. Not at centre half, his proper position, but at right-back.
"And this is a lad with less than 50 first-team appearances to his name.
"It's no wonder we are becoming a mockery at international level, a third-rate country, one still embarrassed by our efforts at the World Cup."
