Stoke City legend Denis Smith is a big fan of current captain Ryan Shawcross.
Smith says he would love to see the Stoke skipper eventually eclipse his own record for a Stoke centre half of 493 first-team appearances.
Shawcross goes into this weekend's game at Liverpool on 299 games and Smith told The Sentinel: "It would have worked, the two of us playing together. Yes, we would have balanced each other well.
"Mind you, I would be the noisy one saying `come here, go there.' I made other people do my work for me! Especially as I got older.
"I was different to Ryan from the off, because he is quiet while I was a bossy b******, even at a young age. I can remember playing in the reserves and hearing the few fans that were there shouting: `Smith! Will you shut up?'
"I'd think it was possible for Ryan to pass my record number of games - and if he does go on to play 500 times for Stoke that would be fantastic."
