Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic is backing skipper Ryan Shawcross for an England call.
The defender is in line for selection following Chelsea captain John Terry's international retirement.
"There's no-one better to fill that void now," said Potters goalkeeper Begovic. "Ryan has been a captain at our club for a long time and that speaks volumes for his leadership qualities.
"Hopefully, he will get a bit more consideration now and he will become a regular in the England squad.
"First and foremost Ryan is a quality defender and I think that is what some people tend to get away from these days.
"Defenders are there to defend and help protect the goal. He does that very well and I think he is adding a bit more quality and composure on the ball.
"He is adding to his game all the time, which is making him a better player. But he is never going to let you down, and he is a good leader as well.
"England couldn't do too much wrong by picking Ryan."
